U.S. Air Strikes On Iranian Backed Militia In Syria

Two U.S. officials told Reuters that the U.S. air raid on a building in Syria on Thursday belonging to an Iranian backed militia group was a clear response to rocket attacks on U.S. targets in Iraq. The agency said the attack was limited, which could reduce the risk of escalation.

The decision to attack only in Syria, not Iraq, will give the Iraqi government a breathing space in its own investigation into the February 15 attack on Americans. Officials who declined to be named said the operation was approved by President Biden.

The rocket attacks on U.S. positions in Iraq coincided with negotiations between Washington and Tehran to resume the 2015 nuclear deal abandoned by former president Donald Trump. In the February 15 attack, a series of rockets hit the US military base at Erbil International Airport in the Kurdish controlled area, killing one non US contractor and injuring several US contractors.
